Prishtina, 21 August 2013 – Without consulting social partners, Thaçi Government sent a draft of administrative instruction for setting the minimum wage to the International Monetary Fund; according to this instruction, minimal wage may be increased only if annual inflation is higher than 2% and if there are changes in real exchange rate, say economic experts of Democratic League of Kosovo (Lidhja Demokratike e Kosovës – LDK).
In a press release, LDK experts said that through these instructions, Thaçi Government tend to deceive unions and workers.
“The first deception is that price of food and transport, which take most of the expenses of families with low income, are not calculated into the inflation. The second scam consists in the fact that if inflation is higher than 2% and there are changes in real exchange rate, than minimum wage will increase to the level of raise of wages in the private sector based on data from the Tax Administration of Kosovo,” considers LDK.
Council of Economic Experts of DLK believes that this does not ensure that the minimum wage meets basic household needs. Thus, Thaçi Government is only bureaucratizing the minimum wage in order to delay and buy social calm. Based on these instructions, the change of the minimum wage would be completely ineffective in protecting the interests of those who work on minimum wage.
