Prishtina, 22 October 2013 - Kosovo Police, assisted by EULEX Organised Crime Investigation Unit (OCIU), yesterday (21 October 2013) conducted three search operations in Kosovo where a number of weapons were seized. The searches were conducted in the framework of a large operation being carried out yesterday in Italy, relating to drug trafficking.
Italian police moved to implement 71 arrest warrants and 117 searches with the cooperation of law enforcement agencies of Albania, Kosovo, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria. Over 700 kilos of drugs were seized after busting an international ring that imported narcotics into Italy via the Balkans.
As part of this large-scale international operation, Kosovo Police Directorate for Investigation of Drug Trafficking and EULEX OCIU during the house searches conducted in Kosovo seized one AK 47, one Scorpion and a pistol with assorted ammunition.
At an international press conference was held in L’Aquila, Italy, Alan Edwards, Chief of OCIU stated that “the operation which was carried out across Europe shows how law enforcement agencies working in cooperation and coordination can successfully fight crime and make Europe a safer place for its community”.
A Kosovo Police official, who participated at the conference, has stated that Kosovo Police is ready to be involved in working very closely with EULEX Police in the fight against transnational organised criminal groups. The winning strategy is to tackle organised crime not only in Kosovo but also in its origin, transit and destination countries.
