Prishtina, 16 December 2013 – The Italian Minister of Defence Mario Mauro, visited the Italian KFOR contingent in Pristina.

Minister Mauro was welcomed at Slatina Military Airport by Major-General Salvatore Farina (COM KFOR) after which he coducted an office call and briefing in KFOR HQ, Camp Film City, where the overall situation in Kosovo was discussed with COM KFOR.

Major-General FARINA outlined the security plan performed during the municipal elections. This security plan enabled the safe conduct of the elections particularly in the northern part of the country where KFOR’s main effort was concentrated.

COM KFOR highlighted the excellent coordination between KFOR the Kosovo Police and EULEX and its importance to ensure the safety of all citizens who went to the polls throughout Kosovo. COM KFOR briefed the Minister on the evolution of the Mission, highlighting the most important steps for the implementation of the agreement between Pristina and Belgrade in order to achieve normalisation.

During the visit, the Italian Minister of Defence met the most important political representatives of Kosovo including the Kosovo Prime Minister, Hashim Thaci, the Minister for the Kosovo Security Forces, Agim Ceku, and later in the day the President of Kosovo Atifete Jahjaga.

Local Political Authorities expressed their appreciation to the Italian Minister for the significnat contribution made to security and stability by the Italian contingent. Italy is one of the most important contributors of KFOR troops with more than 550 Italian soldiers serving in Kosovo.

At the end of his visit Minister Mauro greeted members of the Italian contingent where he emphasised the importance of KFOR in the delicate and tense context of the Balkans and the need to accomplish the mandate contained in the resolution 1244 of the Security Council United Nations.
