Prishtina, 12 December 2013 - Yesterday, an international prosecutor of the Special Prosecution Office (SPRK) filed an indictment against nine defendants for smuggling of migrants as part of a transnational organised criminal group.
It is alleged that the organized criminal group smuggled a significant number of illegal migrants from Turkey and Syria, through Kosovo and other countries, to destinations in Slovenia, Italy, Hungary, Austria, Germany and other countries within the European Union.
The defendants were arrested in December 2012 as part of a joint operation undertaken by the Kosovo Police Department of Organised Crime and EULEX Police Organised Crime Investigation Unit working as a Joint Investigation Team, under the direction of an international prosecutor of the SPRK. The case was based on international co-operation with judicial authorities and national police in EU countries and with Europol. Actions against other members of the alleged criminal group were already undertaken in Kosovo and across the EU.
